Cloud Cult

As one of the pioneering “Green bands” of the modern indie-rock world, Cloud Cult has been passionate about environmental action for over a decade. All Cloud Cult products are 100% post-consumer recycled, their tour bus runs on biodiesel, cds are printed with vegetable dye, and all tours are greened with energy offsets through www.NativeEnergy.com. In addition, the band has planted nearly a thousand trees to absorb pollutants from travel and manufacturing. For SMMPA's latest commercial and renewable energy awareness campaign, the band authorized the free download of their song, "No One Said it Would Be Easy."  For more on Cloud Cult, please visit www.cloudcult.com.

The band has had a mission of environmental sustainability since their inception in the mid ‘90s, planting thousands of trees to offset carbon use, running biodiesel in tour vehicles, using geothermal energy, and using recycled materials in all packaging. Such dedication to the sustainability cause has led the band to work as industry consultants on environmental issues including work with Universal, ASCAP, and a recent partnership with Esurance to “green” the Monolith and Sasquatch festivals.

More than 13% of the energy SMMPA supplies its 18 member utilities comes from renewable and carbon-free sources.

SMMPA purchases all of the power generated from the Wapsipinicon Wind Farm outside of Dexter, MN through a power purchase agreement with enXco. The 67 GE 1.5 MW turbines are expected to annually generate about 335,000 MWh of electricity, enough to meet the annual electricity needs of over 39,000 homes.

SMMPA also owns and operates two 950 kilowatt wind turbines and two 1.65 MW wind turbines located Fairmont as well as two 1.65 MW wind turbines located in Redwood Falls.
