In Minnesota, we have a huge supply of wind. In fact, Minnesota is the ninth windiest state. This great resource combined with the reduced cost of wind power generation over the past several years means that wind power makes a lot of sense for Minnesotans.
SMMPA purchases all power generated from the Wapsipinicon Wind Farm through a power purchase agreement with enXco. The 67 GE 1.5 MW turbines located near Dexter, Minnesota and about 25 miles South of Rochester, Minnesota generate approximately 335,000 MWh of electricity annually, which is enough electricity to meet the needs of over 39,000 homes.
Additionally, the Agency owns and operates two 950 kW wind turbines (installed in March 2003), two 1650 kilowatt (kW) wind turbines located in member community Fairmont (installed in late 2004/early 2005) and two 1650 kW wind turbines located in member community Redwood Falls (installed in late 2004/early 2005). Combined, these turbines generate over 27 million kilowatt-hours of clean, renewable electricity annually from a limitless Minnesota resource - the wind.
